"Help Us to Help People Help Themselves"

A family was walking along a beach full of stranded small fish which lay dyi059.jpgng in the sun. The family's079.jpg youngest daughter stopped every now and then to throw one fish back into the water, where it would live and thrive. Finally the father asked her: "Why do you keep doing that? Can't you see how many there are? What difference does it make to throw a few back?" The daughter looked at her father and replied:

"It makes a great difference to the ones I throw back, dad".

Tunoshisho is a private, voluntary, non-profit, non-religious organization, training and equipping the rural poor in Namibia. We know we can't help them all. But we will do our best and try to help some! Our projects will focus on: pure water supply, sanitation (toilets and washrooms), simple affordable housing and basic knowledge regarding the use of waste to produce fertilizers. Access to free fertilizers will enable the poor to grow their own food.

Tunoshisho Rosenhave Welfare Organisation is registered as a welfare organisation in Norway.

Our Norwegian registration number is: 985 032 580

Tunoshisho Rosenhave Welfare Organisation is also registered with the Namibian Ministry of Health and Social Services as a welfare organisation in terms of Section 19 of Act 12 of 1979.

Our Namibian registration number is: WO285

The meaning of Tunoshisho in the Oshiwambo language is: “We Care”

There are a few things which are really essential in life. Water to drink, food to eat and a house to live in is taken for granted by many. But most people are not that lucky. To most of them water and food are rare commodities, - PURE water even more so.

Digging a Well: Never an easy task, - especially if you are digging by hand in pure sand. More than one young man has been buried deep down a hand dug well under construction. The best is to dig where the termites have decided to build their house. But as you know, they don’t always consider your needs. Using modern off-shore bushing technology is a better idea. A homemade concrete bushing consisting of a stack of concrete rings may save your life and still secure that precious water resource. That is; if - you can afford it.

Having your Own House: Is everyone's dream. A strong safe house where you can enjoy your privacy, keep your food and other belongings safe and sheltered from the forces of nature, raise your children or where you just relax when needed, - is a dream unattainable to most people.

If you have the know-how, it is possible to use sand and cement only and build fairly big, safe comfortable houses, cool during the day - warm at night. It does not cost much, some say. But if you have nothing, "not much" is still quite a lot.

Farming: Farming has never been easy. But when you are out in the bush, where your farmland is mainly sand with little water- it is definitely a challenge. Cows, goats and chicken are considered "bank deposits". The more animals you have, the richer you are. This leads to overgrazing, here as elsewhere.

Growing Crops: Growing crops all year around is definitely not impossible, if you know how to and have the necessary recourses available (mainly water and fertilizers). But making a "green oasis" in the bush attracts insects. Especially the locusts are very happy when provided with such a lush self-service. (Count the number of locusts on the maize plant pictured to the right and you will understand.) Pesticides are no sustainable solution. Crops must be grown in a protected environment instead.

Natural Fertilizers: Buying fertilizers is no option either. They are too expensive. But by introducing urine separating toilets we are solving two problems at the same time. The "bush toilet" standard is greatly improved, safety from scorpions and snakes are appreciated and the urine can be used as a Nitrogen fertilizer while the faeces is composted and used as a soil improver as well as Phosphor and Calcium contributor.

The Team: If there is a will, - there is a way!

The joy and effort shown is remarkable. Knowledge and a bit of simple technology is definitely the key to success.
